BYD proposes public transport electrification solutions, expecting to reduce vehicle exhaust by 56% for Hong Kong

On March 21, BYD announced public transport electrification solutions in Hong Kong, expecting to replace fuel bus and taxi to promote the public transport electrification in HK and reduce air pollution. It is expected to reduce by about 56% vehicle exhaust for HK and planned to launch e6 electric taxi at around May this year. This press conference attracted political leaders and auto industry leaders as well as people from news media in HK. The board chairman and CEO WANG Chuanfu, office director assistant of Shenzhen Energy-saving & New Energy Vehicles Promotion Group LU Xiangzhen, and DU Jun from Shenzhen Pengcheng Electric Taxi Co., Ltd. made speeches on the press conference. President WANG said: Hong Kong has been dedicated to promoting green transport in recent years, taking the lead in realizing public transport electrification, which saves operating costs of transportation, reduces exhaust emission from traditional fuel oil (petroleum), improves air quality and brings huge social value. BYD plans to operate in Hong Kong e6 electric vehicles in 2014 on a large scale.” The first batch of 45 BYD e6 electric vehicles are planned to be launched around May this year. The first batch of 3 charging stations invested by BYD and many partners have been built, located at Oi Man Estate, Shek Wai Kok Estate and Wong Tai Sin. The second batch of charging station is expected to complete before May, which can ensure each taxi is covered by a charging station. At the same time, BYD works together with many local partners to promote the development of HK public transport electrification. Public transport is one of main pollution sources of city air. According to studies, in Hong Kong the exhaust of a taxi per day is equal to the total exhaust of 14 private cars; the exhaust of a single-decker bus is equal to that of 33 private cars; and the exhaust of a double-decker is equal to that of 57 private cars. If 18,000 petroleum gas taxies and 12,000 diesel buses in Hong Kong are replaced with electric taxies and buses, it will reduce exhaust emission of more than 800,000 private cars, which will greatly facilitate the realization of HK’s goal in zero emission and pollution Public transport electrification is one of the most effective ways for reducing emission and improving air pollution. In addition, due to difference in prices of petroleum gas and electric power, the electric vehicles can also save a lot of operating costs. Each e6 electric vehicle can save as much as 110,000 HK dollars operating costs per year (see the table).

Comparison of Operating Costs of Petroleum Gas Taxi and BYD e6 Electric Taxi

Project Petroleum Gas Taxi E6 electric taxi Costs saved by electric taxi compared with petroleum gas taxi
Energy consumption per hundred km 17L 26kWh /
Oil price/electricity price (HKD) 5 1.01 /
Distance traveled per day (KM) 500 500 /
Operating Days per Year (Day) 353 353 /
Operating Expenditure per Day (HKD) 451 131 320
Operating Expenditure per Year (HKD) 159,027 46,349 112,678

Remark: a taxi in Hong Kong runs on average 500km per day and 353 days per year (taxi is serviced for one day per month); the petroleum gas taxi consumes about 17L petroleum gas per hundred km, and petroleum gas is 5HKD/L in Hong Kong; e6 electric taxi consumes about 26kwh per hundred kilometers; and the electricity price is 1.01HKD per kilowatt-hour.

BYD electric vehicle adopts the safest LFP batteries, its high performance makes it withstand extreme tests; in addition, LFP battery features excellent battery life. Take the e6 electric vehicle as an example, after charging for 4,000 times, the battery capacity still stays at over 75%, the battery’s service life is far longer than one million kilometers, which fully satisfies the need of taxi and private car. Besides, e6 electric vehicle has passed safety test by international standards, and K9 electric bus has also passed WVTA, ensuring the safety of electric vehicles.

BYD started to carry out large-scale commercial operation of electric vehicles since 2010. Up to the end of February this year, BYD has put into operation 800 e6 electric taxies in Shenzhen successively, the accumulated travelled distance nearly 55 million kilometers, and the maximum mileage of a vehicle is nearly 300,000 km, equal to the ten-year mileage of an ordinary private cars; the total distance covered by 200 K9 electric buses exceeds 14 million kilometers, and the mileage of a vehicle reaches 110,000km. These electric vehicles run stably, and the battery capacity has no noticeable decline, and they are liked by the citizens.

The electric vehicle technology is becoming mature, plus good performance of large-scale commercial operation, the public transport electrification has been gradually recognized by all countries. As the global trend of public transport electrification is emerging, BYD also promotes the development of public transport electrification in many cities of China, Holland, USA, Denmark, Columbia and Britain. BYD is introducing 50 e6 electric taxies to London, Britain to build the first electric fleets; and 49 e6 electric taxies to Bogota, Columbia as the first stage and is planned to put into trial operation in first half of this year; and in Hong Kong, BYD will also operate large-scale e6 electric vehicles.

Electric vehicles have become the trend of urban public transport in the world. The electric vehicles of BYD is low in operating costs, passes relevant international safety test, adopts the safest LFP cell, features long service life, and battery life, convenient and safe charging. It can undoubtedly promote the wide application of green vehicles in HK in the future, and bring huge economic and environmental benefits for Hong Kong. (Reported by: WEI Xiunian)
